why I still do the work myself instead of handing it off
When you hire me you get me, the person who does the work, and this is why I set it up that way.
Hi,
A question I get on almost every call, usually a little sideways: "So who actually does the work?"
It is a fair question, because the answer at most agencies is: not the person you are talking to. You meet a salesperson. You get an account manager. The account manager sends tasks to whoever is free that week, and the person who touches your listing has never heard your voice, does not know your town, and will be on a different account next month.
My answer is short. I do. The listing, the website, the review setup, the retargeting, the monthly screenshot. Me. The person you email is the person who did the thing you are emailing about.
Here is the lesson behind that: in local marketing, the details are the work. There is no big idea that ranks a plumber in Quincy. There is a category field, a services list, a title tag, a footer, a review link, a reply to a customer, a photo with the town in the caption. Dozens of small, boring, specific decisions, and every one of them has to be right for your business, not right in general. The moment those decisions get handed to someone who does not know you, they start being made in general.
Picture the difference on one small thing. Say a med spa offers a treatment that is popular in its town but has a name most people do not use when they search. A person who knows the business writes the service in the words customers actually type, puts that on the listing and the site, and asks for reviews that use those words. A person working a task list types the treatment's clinical name in the field, marks the task done, and moves on. Both did the work. Only one of them will show up on the map.
The other reason is accountability. The six public website examples on the home page can be opened and inspected, and the monthly rank grid lets a client see the measured search rather than rely on a vague report. When I describe the plan, I also link the terms and the measurement method so the claim can be checked.
The websites are the clearest case. A site that gets the call is built around one action, and every choice on the page serves it: what the title says, where the call button sits, what happens when the visitor taps it on a phone. I wrote out what that looks like here: website optimization, the site the click lands on. That page describes work I do, on sites I build, and nothing on it is theory.
There is a trade in this. I work alone, so I take on fewer businesses than an agency does, and only one business per industry in each area, because I will not compete against my own client on the same map. If you are that business, you get the person who does the work. If I am full, I will tell you so.
That is the whole answer to "who does the work." The person writing this.
Talk soon,
Brandon
