Newton, Massachusetts

Local SEO agency in Newton, MA

Newton is a city of villages, and the Maps top 3 changes from Newton Centre to West Newton to Chestnut Hill. I get one business per industry into the top 3 for its main search within 90 days, or billing pauses. Here is how it works village by village.

Newton is not one downtown. It is a city of villages, each with its own center, main street and train stop. For Google Maps that means Newton is really a dozen small markets next to each other. The top 3 in Newton Centre is not the top 3 in West Newton, and neither is the top 3 in Chestnut Hill, where Brookline and Boston are across the street.

Why the top 3 moves from village to village

Google's help page on local ranking names relevance, distance and prominence. In a city built like Newton, distance does a lot of the work, because Google draws a fresh map from where the searcher stands:

A business can be first from its own village and ninth two villages over. So I check the same search from spots across the whole city every month, and your site gets a page for each part of Newton you actually serve.

Newton villages and landmarks I plan around

These go into the profile description, the services, the photo locations and your area pages.

The Newton businesses my plan fits

My plan fits you if you are one of these, already doing well, and want more:

One business per industry per area. If I already have a plumber in Newton, I tell you on the call.

How it works in my plan

Profile changes show in one to three days, website changes in days to weeks, citations in weeks to months. So the order is fixed.

  1. Google Business Profile rebuilt category by category. Primary category picked from what the current top 3 use, secondary categories, every section complete, services with descriptions, photos at real Newton locations, a booking link, questions and answers, weekly updates, a reply to every review. This is the base of Google Maps ranking.
  2. Website optimization. Title and headline that say the service and Newton, MA. Name, address and phone in the footer identical to the listing. The Google map embedded, one clear call to action, one page per service, one page per village you serve, all linked, fast on a phone, schema markup. More on the website optimization page.
  3. A review system your team runs. One tap link, a script for the moment the customer is happiest, a reply to every review. Steady reviews every month beat bursts. See the review system.
  4. Citations cleaned up so name, address and phone match everywhere.
  5. Retargeting on Google and Meta. A small budget, ten to twenty percent of a cold budget, so people who already found you keep seeing you on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. It does not move the Maps position.
  6. A dated rank grid every month. The same search from the same spots across Newton. Red dots where you are not in the top 3, green where you are.

The 90 day line

The plan defines a top-three Google Maps goal for the main search term and target area. If it is not reached within 90 days of access, billing pauses until it is and restarts from the next billing cycle, subject to the terms of service. Google does not publish a fixed ranking timetable, so changes are measured rather than predicted.

One flat monthly rate, quoted in writing before anything starts and locked for as long as we work together. Month to month, no long contract, a one page plan with the scope, price, date and what done means.

A checklist you can run in ten minutes

Open your listing and your website side by side:

  1. Does your primary category match what the top 3 in your village use for your search?
  2. Does your website title say your service and the word Newton?
  3. Are name, address and phone in your footer identical to the listing?
  4. Is there a page on your site for each part of Newton you serve?
  5. Did you get a review in the last 30 days, and did you reply?

Questions people ask

I'm in Newton Centre and I show up there, but not in West Newton. Is something wrong?

Probably not. Google draws the map from where the searcher is, and West Newton is several villages away. Reaching the top 3 across the city takes a page for each village on your site, steady reviews and a profile that names those areas.

My competition is in Boston and Brookline, not Newton. Does that matter?

In Chestnut Hill and Newton Corner it matters, because the map from there includes Brighton and Brookline. I cover those on my Boston page and my Brookline page.

Should I add "Newton" to my business name on Google?

Only if it is your real registered name. Adding place names or changing the name back and forth triggers re-verification and can get the listing suspended. The villages go in the description, services, posts and website.

What do I have to do myself?

About an hour at the start to give me access to the Google Business Profile and the website login. Then ask customers for reviews with the link I give you, and a short check in each month.

I cover all of Newton plus Wellesley, Needham and Waltham. Can I set that as my service area?

Not at first. A giant service area on a new or weak listing dilutes it everywhere. Start tight with Newton and the closest towns, get into the top 3 there, then widen one town at a time.
